Honestly, on the i IBM is pretty reasonable.

They only want more money with you go up in processor tier. But given
the technology, every upgrade I've ever done was to a much faster
machine in the same or even a lower p-group.

Third party vendors are another story, some are reasonable with low to
zero fee to transfer the license to a new box at the same p-group.
Others are not so reasonable, with many but not all EDI vendors in the
second group. Place I used to work just went from a 270 to a 515 and
I think the charge for Sterling's Gentran EDI software was less than
500.

Make sure when you are looking at software packages, you find out the
vendor policy's and get them in writing.

Lastly, it seems to make more a difference on the smaller boxes. As
IBM doesn't usually support an in place upgrade to new technology.
Instead your stuck with a "fork-lift" upgrade or "box-swap" whereby
you save off the old box and restore to the new box. Thus, you end up
with a new serial number.

With an in-place upgrade, IBM keeps the serial number the same on the
new machine even if you've basically replaced everything.

2. What are some key tips you would pass along to another
company that is considering using this product?

Most important is that if the machine is ever up-sized in the future,
they will hold out their hand wanting more money even though
nothing in
the EDI setup has changed.

Gee, I thought that is was only a "z" problem. It is one of the reasons
we are looking at converting off the "z". You do an upgrade in order to
support more work which on an in-house written application, and ever
vendor (IBM included) get a big grin and puts out a grasping hand.
