Although Java hasn't grown to replace RPG or COBOL as an application
development language on the i, it is thoroughly integrated into the i. IBM
uses Java extensively in many of the performance and management tools, and
in web development. We had some issues earlier this year that could be
corrected by IBM PTFs without a system IPL by ending all Java
applications. But when we started investigating all of the IBM
applications that utilized Java, it became apparent that the simplest way
to shutdown and restart the Java applications was to do a system IPL.

The i supports Java, and Java is utilized on the i, but it's largest use
is probably in web applications, not as a traditional application
development language.

Subject
How popular is Java on the i?

I know that the book that I'm reading (Inside the AS/400) is very old
(1997). It has been very interesting to get some of the i concepts down.
But I'm now in the "future speculation" in Chapter 11. On page 300, he
states: "We in the AS/400 Division are betting on Java to become our
future business programming language for object-oriented applications,
..."

So, I'm curious. Is Java popular on the i? I know that it is not a
popular as it was touted to be back in the day.
