So my question is, is it really the processor or Windows version that
matters when
installing System i Access for Windows?

Yes. :-)

If you're running 32-bit windows then you can only run 32-bit software,
full-stop. If you're running 64-bit windows, then you need to know which
architecture you have underneath. I don't have the CD w/me, but I'd
guess isn't not actually AMD vs. Intel, but rather IA64 vs. X64.

Intel's first attempt at 64-bit was IA64, and it's got its advantages,
but at a cost, it's not backwards compatible w/the x86 (32-bit)
instruction set. So if you're on IA64 _all_ your software must be for
IA64. No big deal on a server, not very viable on a desktop. AMD came
along w/the x86-64 (now AMD64) instruction set which is a 64-bit set,
but still backwards compatible w/x86. Intel also makes X64 chips (EM64T)
and most "desktop" chips today are 64-bit x64 chips.

There should be no difference between Intel's x64 and AMD's x64
binaries, but there is a big difference between IA64 and x64 binaries.
