That Netgear router does have a VPN client for another $44.

My recommendation would be to not use consumer grade equipment in
order to run important business connectivity.

There are lots of small VPN/Firewall routers for very reasonable
prices (1500-2000 US$) that offer superior reliablity, support and
functionality. After all, your customer does not run their ERP on a PC
either, the elected to use proper server hardware.

I would recommend a SonicWALL NSA240 in your case, but there are many
other vendors that offer similar functionality for around the same
price - Watchguard, Cisco, Checkpoint, Astaro, etc.

Depending on how your internet access works, it might make sense to
reconfigure your telcos router into bridge mode and terminate the
connection directly on the firewall. However, it is impossible for me
to give you any specifics here as this depends on the ISP, which i do
not know.
