You can write Windows apps that use the i as a database. We do it.
We have guys writing C# apps that access the i database. No big deal.
We have guys writing Flex apps that access the i via web services.
No big deal. We write Java/JSP apps running on WAS with great GUIs
using YUI widgets. Again, no big deal. We consume web services with
RPG with ease (thanks Scott and HTTPAPI!). And we're getting into
PHP. We're also looking at taking a 3rd party package we use and
porting the database over to MySQL and the DB2 storage engine on the
i. Other than actually running Windows on the box, you can do
virtually anything you want with it.

That's not to say I don't have my complaints. We have had a few too
many PTFs with our name on them this year. That's what you get for
pushing the system. Are you pushing the system?

I have recently been looking at ERP packages from both i based, either RPG or Java, mostly RPG and the Windows based. I can tell you that the W based are more impressive screens. Prettier, offering more Microsoft sophistery, better functionality. With the i packages, it seems like everything is more complicated to do screensides. Now, I love the i, and I would prefer to work on an i until I retire but I must be honest.

Now, I am not talking price, it can very well be that the cost is better on the i. I suspect it is, and I will know more about that, in the coming months.

If only the i software vendors could mimic the screens of the W world.

Thank you,

Probably because they ARE new names for the same thing. *New, better,
faster, higher-capacity versions* of the same thing, but still
essentially the same thing.
