Yes - that is the luck based approach. As you see for yourself, it
worked so far. Will it work in the future? You don't know, i don't
know.
What do you do if the system board fails? You'll need a new system
password, which IBM won't give you cause the machine isn't under
maintenance. Or for that matter, you'll need to find a suitable system
board first.
I do not know a lot about US law, but promoting such approaches as an
IT consultant here in Switzerland is considered "grossly negligent",
and you can be held responsible for advice which is obviously wrong
and ill advised.
While these legal repercussions may not apply to you, you'll still
have to deal with the potential fallout anyway. And then it'll be your
fault - not the boss that wanted to save a teensy-tiny-bit of money.
A new M15 still costs about 1/20 of what the car of a company
executive costs - so don't save money on important and business
critical stuff.
