If you can run all V6R1 I would strongly recommend that. And this is
why...
V6R1 significantly reduces the cost of lpar's. No longer is dedicated
disk controllers, etc needed. Think of it like a cross of the old
controlling partition days, and the IXS/IXA/iSCSI realm. Unlike the old
controlling partitions no additional hardware is needed. Like the old
controlling partitions, if you bring down the one, the others die.
Like the IXS... and guested Linux and AIX, you do a WRKCFGSTS *NWS and see
the guested partitions.

You still need the HMC to run this.

But I literally configured a guested partition remotely, from scratch,
using remote access to my HMC, while at COMMON Directions.

If you just have to have a pre v6r1 partition you can do that but it will
have to be a separate dedicated partition, with the hardware requisites.

Recommend that the hosting partition be the "vital" one. That way you can
IPL GUEST1 without affecting VITAL. If you make the hosting partition the
playground then it's hard to IPL it without affecting VITAL. This
resulted in one Unload/reload, scratch a system, for me.

I have two guested partitions on one hosting partition on one M25.
I have three host partitions on another M25 and one of them hosts a guest.
The other two hosts are running V5R4M5.
