RE: Auto reply to printer messages

This is a perfect solution because it gives us a standard way to install LAN printers without forcing
users to take messages every Monday, or whenever the writer is restarted. And it forces some
standardization in our naming standards. And it allows us to do this over multiple boxes without
having to maintain system reply lists on each box.

Just to expand on what Chuck has posted: Thanks to some helpful people
on this
list, we now have auto reply to specific printers based on generic names. For
example, the letters 'FR' in positions 8 and 9. This works GREAT.
Only had to
add (in our case), 4 entries to handle a large number of printers. There are
negatives associated with this method. For starters, you need some
standardized printer naming convention. The second issue is care must be used
on the comparison data as well as when new printers are defined so that the
auto reply does not get sent inappropriately. But, those may not be big
hassles.

When a printer writer is started using STRPRTWTR, it defaults to
*Inquiry messages being sent for
changing forms etc. This is useful for impact printers because the user
needs to adjust the tractors.
However for laser printers, and other cut sheet printers, it still sends
the message. Is there an
easy way to inhibit these messages for cut sheet printers? I don't want
to use the system reply list
because we have a mix of cut sheet and continuous forms printers. Some
printers need the message,
others don't. I really don't want to have to manage the system reply
list.
