This is true, but....We at the Treasurer's Office are our own little entity in the county government. We control our apps without exception. IT cannot use me as a resource - I am owned by the Treasurer's Office. We are not part of IT even though control of the 400 is in "their" hands. We use it and hope that when the backups fail, we won't have to do a restore any time soon after that.

Our apps are all green screen. A couple of years ago we started the move to web dev - way, way behind schedule.

We will not incorporate anything other than green screen apps into our system. We do have CLs we've written to send the data to our LAN where our users can move it into Excel. We only allow data back up to the AS/400 through programs we've written. We totally control that. When the system was written years ago, they were in a time crunch (as always) and didn't give the users all of the tools they need, so rather than take a day or whatever to write a program when I can whip out with a query, my users will get a tool they need.

So, yes, IT has the products; we do green screen until the new system is built.

Thanks for your input.

Of course if SQL pre-compiling is not also desired [because it would
be used], then buying ST1 is an added expense that might not be
justified, merely to obtain some green-screen query tooling. There
should be plenty of other ways to get query reporting capabilities,
green screen or otherwise, without having to buy the precompiler support
from IBM. Access via ODBC and JDBC are not added cost, and if the CIO
likes web/PC, then they may already have products that do reports from a
PC or browser.

just "soft sell" the idea. even with the stingiest customers i've
dealt with if they understand that you can't fully utilize SQL they
know enough about the power and usefulness of the tool and i've never
failed to have the product purchased. and i couldn't sell ice water
in hell...

We are short on pgmr utilities here. Current [and previous] CIO is
Web/PC - no IBM experience that I know of. We have a good sized IT
staff, but only 6 of us who program on the 400. One of us has been
pretty vocal lately with the new CIO hoping to get us current with
releases, utilities, etc. I don't know how much luck he's had.

I'll just plod along so I can get some tools 'my users' desperately
need - quickly - that is presentable to them and acceptable from my
supv's standpoint. <<SNIP>>
