Remember, the whole PHP/MySQL stuff isn't really an i application, it
just runs in PASE. And that means that it works like the rest of the
world - porting a application from 32bit to 64bit requires a
recompile.

PASE works with 32bit and 64bit AIX binaries. I think the reason why
both 32bit and 64bit binaries are being offered is the fact that it
may aid compatibility with certain 3rd party PHP extensions, but
that's just a guess.

Thanks, Lukas. That makes a lot of sense. I remember the evil days of "thunking" when Windows was struggling to move from 16-bit to 32-bit; having a version for each architecture is better if you can afford it. What I find interesting is that the 32-bit JVM is touted to run better (not to mention smaller) than the 64-bit version. In my copious free time, I may install both versions of MySQL and see which runs faster.
