I see that as a disadvantage.

Why on earth would that be a disadvantage? Think in business terms ... if you wrote a program 25 years ago, and it works perfectly, why would you need to change it? The fact that the program runs today the same way it ran when it was first written (over 3 or 4 hardware changes) means that the company it's running for hasn't had to invest time or money in re-engineering it. They've been able to invest the saved time & money in more important things.
