I don't recall any field-reference-file that was 'added to the product'...
not to say IBM couldn't slip one under my radar.

Perhaps you're thinking of the CREATE TABLE AS or CREATE TABLE LIKE support?
The 'AS' support has been enhanced over the years to allow for non-standard
extensions like RCDFMT, short system names etc.
We have several customers that use the 'AS' support in lieu of a
field-reference-file.
