While I know you don't like hearing about EGL, Scott, I do have to
respond to this.
EGL is not limited to web development. EGL can be used to build batch
applications that run on the i, or even 5250 applications. It can even
create platform-independent thick-client applications, although I don't
think a lot of resources are being spent there.
In fact, EGL is the only language I know that can generate applications
that run in the browser, in a web application server, on a desktop, and
in 5250 or batch on the i.
So while in the previous context we were indeed discussing web
development, it's potentially possible to talk about using EGL to, for
example, write applications that run in batch on the System i and
consume web services. This would be in contrast to writing such code in
Java or RPG.
