thats a good point, and depending on your network or
login line speed, the less data you FTP the better the
response, not everyone has remote DSL or T1 services,
but a lot of this has to do with "how much" excel work
you have to do..

for me it was a convience choice, I log in to our i from different
locations, however, all my excel macro work and documents are
only on my office workstation.
so.. I found it much easier to do 95% of my work in sql on the
i and have my data "ready to publish". that way I can grab that
data file from any web app and my calculations and other
data are housed on a site I can get to from anywhere.
and all my work is protected by system backups. my pc work
has to be backed up manually by me.

as far as the 2 step process.. well, once written, most of the
files are built nightly using a CL in the i scheduler to call my sql jobs
