We have a similar situation, we recently set up the SSL. I think the only reason to use the vpn is that we have some remote printers configured as local, and the vpn hides that from the AS/400.

Subject: VPN access

Hi All,

We have a software package written in ILE RPG. We use a Seagull product
to put a GUI over the green screens.

We have about 1,000 users that come into our iSeries through a VPN. I
was just asked by management if we actually need the VPN. Could we just
use SSL to allow our customers to run our application? After all, I
don't need a VPN to access my bank account over the internet. And there
is a lot of overhead/cost in setting up the VPN connection.

So, my question is, Do we need a VPN to run a secured application using
5250 or can we do it with just SSL? Second question is, what is
everybody else doing?
