Yeah, our auditors are like that: Reading from a script.
Auditors are not a necessary evil; they are necessary. I have worked with some real duds and some great ones. The latter sit down with the client and (a) explain "Why" they want something, and (b) listen and learn. I worked with a great one years ago who, if he had made a request to audit usage of any command, would have listened and reflected after I noted (as others have done here) the numerous backdoors available to circumvent his motives. John would have then revised his request to a more reasonable and practical objective.
