Got some more =) :

gtkam - digital camera software (works very well with a canon eos 400d)
gtkpod - ipod software
evolution, kmail, sylpheed - email client
gwenview - image viewer
xpdf - pdf viewer (because adobe sucks)
xCHM - Compiled/Compressed HTML viewer
RhythmBox - music

you don't need any graphical tool like winzip or so for working with
file archives because the command line is your friend =))) (tar, gzip,
unzip, unrar, ...)

but before you buy hardware, you'll really want to check if it is
supported (check if there are any linux driver out there). that does NOT
mean that the hardware support under linux is not good, but there are
some vendors who doesn't play nice with linux.

and don't think that the hardware support under windoze is so much
better. here at work someone has a standard dell notebook (D505 latitude)
running win xp and they are not able to get the wlan mini-pci card
running (and i think it is not the fault of the support guys).

and if you'll want to be productive an a small
machine then use blackbox as a window manager. got it working on my
laptop (thinkpad x21 =)
Hope it helps

Thanks, Mihael. I forgot to ask, but hoped that a few people might
share their experience with Linux.

Most of my time is spent working on Web applications and I looked at
Bluefish and Komposer HTML editors. Dreamweaver is such a full-featured
IDE that it would be a stretch for me to leave behind, but I think it
would be worth it. Your application list is helpful.

One of my complaints is that it seems that no matter how fast of a CPU
you get, every year it runs slower because of the complexity of Windows
software and runtime environments. Virus protection under Windows is a
nuisance, but required. Is it required under Linux?

Nathan.
