A post from someone at [a migration vendor]

My only post on the subject.

Steve, while I appreciate your concern for the ongoing viability of the platform, I'd really prefer if you didn't turn Midrange-L into an advertising vehicle for any of the migration vendors. This particular issue has been hashed out for a long time, and I think it's been decided that there is no place on this list for discussion of migration software, approaches or vendors. David can chime in on that particular issue. But certainly it's no place to post vendor comments.

Especially for migration. Moving a stable RPG application off of the i to any other platform, and specifically Windows, is a bad decision from every possible point of view, except for that of the migration vendors. The Fear Factor approach that some of the vendors have used over the years is pretty despicable, but hey, it's marketing so we have to live with it. But there's no need for it here.

Anybody - and I do mean anybody - who has seen a successful migration of a custom RPG application from the IBM midrange to any other platform, feel free to counter me. If someone has true data of a technical nature to share, I'd love to hear specifics: things like response time for users and total runtime for month-end batch processing, as well as the cost of the project, length of time it took to implement and how much you're saving now.

My guess? Not one taker. Instead, the best you'll ever see is marketing pablum, and we just don't need any more of that here. So, while competition is all well and good, can we please refrain from posting migration vendor advertisements on the list?

Hey, wow... this was my April rant, I think... I may actually be ahead a month! (Although I may have uised it up at the end of March, I forget. <smile>)
