Concerning compatibility issues, I had those with the .docx format in M$
Office 2007. OpenOffice can't open .docx files, but OxygenOffice (based on
OpenOffice) opens them just fine. Hopefully they will implement the
OxygenOffice capabilities back into the base OpenOffice.
Depending on which version you use OpenOffice can read .docx files.
OOo 2.3 in Ubuntu 7.10 reads them fine, but not the stock 2.3 or 2.4
direct from the OOo site. However Sun just announced the beta of
version 3.0 yesterday -
http://marketing.openoffice.org/3.0/announcementbeta.html - which does
offer import filters (as well as lots of other stuff). 3.0 final is
due in September.
Lotus Symphony is based on the OOo 1.x (might be 1.0.2) codebase and I
had problems with a number of our office files, even ones generated in
Office 97. I'll stick to OOo for the time being.
