Lukas only said the cages are hot swappable. The RAID controller must also support hot swap.

Our CE made a comment one time that he thought a 170 could support hot swap if it did not have an 2740 disk controller card. Common RAID5 cards for the 170 were 2740, 2741 and 2748. Dr Franken could probably give a better answer.
