The command prompts fine with 10AB56 pre-loaded in the SHIP
ITEM parameter

The problem I have is the user has the option to blank out
the value, but whenever they do and press <Enter>

the command re-displays with 10AB56 in the SHIP ITEM
parameter.

I don't want the user to have to enter *NONE or ' '

Is there something in the CMD source code for the parameter
that makes the command accept blanks as a valid value?

Yes there is but that's not your problem. The system is doing what you told it to do by your use of the ?? prompt characters. Read the CL Programmer's Guide (or whatever they've called it now) section on command prompting and see the table that shows how the Command Analyzer behaves when selective prompting is used. In all cases, if you provide a value on the prompt and the user clears it out the prompt is redisplayed with the original value. Either your user must type a different value or you must provide a different input method.

Simon Coulter.
