With the existing support in the IFS today, you can create a symbolic link to create an "alias" name for these objects:
addlnk obj('qsys.lib/mylib.lib/myprogram1.pgm') newlnk('/home/mydir/myVeryLongDescriptiveProgramName')

I am just not sure how you can use it?

I'd imagine that would drive the tool vendors nuts. If you think they went bonkers when IBM allowed you to use more than 25 libraries in a library list, just think how ballistic they'll go on that change.

Only if it breaks existing code.

If instead of changing the QSYS.LIB file system, IBM were to add a new file system that aliased long names to the short ones, it should remain compatible. If you recall, Windows 95 had both short and long names.
