Trevor,
One issue I feel is completely over looked when you talk of name change is
the fact that a lot of us are still actually working with an AS/400. Sure
new machines are i5/iSeries/System i/etc.

Up until a few months ago the only IBM Midrange machine in my environment
was an AS/400 Model 170, so do you think I should call it an i5 just to be
politically correct.

In the office the people call it an AS/400 because it is an AS/400. I have
worked with an AS/400 since 1989. A dinosaur, yes (the machine too! and a
great machine just the same) but no engineer has come in and replaced the
badge on the cover to say i5 or Series i.

Why should call it an i5?

I now have an i5 and an AS/400 in my environment and will differentiate them
accordingly but will everyone in the office? No because they won't see a
significant difference in the applications.

I don't believe for one moment that because someone refers to an i5 as an
AS/400 that it will cause the demise of the "i" platform. face it, IBM did
that on their own with the perceived view that, after milking the cash cow,
it should die gracefully. A similar view was held in the 1970's, COBOL is
dead and will be replaced.

Just my $0.02 worth.

Don,

If you have actually read my rantings, you will have seen a trend. All I
have asked IBM for is ONE brand/name that we can use.

I pick on you, because you stubbornly stick to a name that is last century
and is used by the enemies of i to call us old and outdated. My point on
using 400 is that if WE keep calling it that, WE will be the demise of the
platform. Since you don't give a crap about the demise of the i, you
apparently are free to call it by the OLD name.

I care about the platform. I call it what it IS, not what it WAS. Today, the
ONE name is no longer hardware focused. That one name is: i5/OS. And no,
from what I read, it is not changing soon.

How is that for a gasket blow, mr. 400?
Trevor

P.S. And if you DO notice when I give you a button at COMMON it is iGeek and
iNerd and i,i,i.... (How is that for hedging my bets?) Get your own this
year at: http://www.cafepress.com/angustheitchap/4738116
I am sure I will be giving out iGeek buttons, unless you use the word "400"
to define the platform. For that, the iPolice will have to write you a
ticket..
