Well, I'm just doing a small sub-contract portion of this project, so I
was not in on the initial decision making process to move to a new
system. Sorry, but I have no insights at all into that decision making
process. I just happen to have an application that can harvest documents
from a juke box on a System i and I get calls every once in a while to do
that part of a conversion project.
To tell the truth, I have never even seen the juke box that this
application works for .... it has all been developed, tested and
implemented remotely.
I am curious. Will the proposed solution in fact be better, faster, or
cheaper once all 7 million docs are moved?
For some reason (probably prejudice and ignorance) I have never thought
of PDF as being fast, small, or cheap.

Shannon,
Initially, it was taking forever and we were only extracting about 20
documents a minute. If you do the math, I think that would end up taking
years to get all 7 million documents. But, we have since re-engineered
the extraction process to do it in "platter" sequence that that has sped
up the extraction process considerably. But, you're right, the juke box
is the limiting factor in this.
