Hmm, that's an oldie, but a goodie. Based on the IBM Reference# 8625688700566393, it should work. Did you create a new device description, or just use the old one?

I had my 3490E drive die on me the other day. The replacement is not
working quite right though. I have changed the setting on the drive so
that it's using the 3490E Model F configuration. When I initialize a
tape it will only initialize to *FMT3480, I cannot get it to initialize
to *FMT3490E. You could use either format on the old drive.
What am I missing here.
