You didn't, by chance, add these new drives to a controller on the same
bus as what controls the tape drive did you? That can be a real killer.
I've found it pays to always put the tape controller on a bus separate
from any disk controllers/raid cards, etc.

I'd also keep an eye on
PRTERRLOG TYPE(*VOLSTAT) VOLTYPE(3580)
to see if some tape is going bad as a coincidence.
