(Serial# change- That's true, but all the IBM software was transferrable (subscription). There are config issues with the new serial, but manageable.
The new machine at V5r4M5 would not ipl from the v5r4m0 save system tape - console issues that IBM was working on.

Thanks Jim. It seems that we won't be able to keep our serial number if we go this route however.

I'm in the process of replacing a 520 with a 515.
The 520 had reached end of lease. We were not in great need of performance
boost, but the maintenance cost (hardware and P10 software)
was huge compared to a new 515, one year hdw maint free, and P05 software
level, plus a cpw boost from 1000 to 3800, which while not needed now, would
be needed as we add more cpu intensive apps (more sql, more http serving).
Their monthly payment from prev lease went down
over 50%.
We have few local users (12) and many (100's) remote/web users.
What did hit us after the decision was some software vendors having a
substantial transfer fee (most were free to a few hundred). Have learned the
lesson to check this first.

Subject: 520 "Upgrade path"

Good morning all,

In the past, we've upgraded our AS/400 (iSeries) systems every three years
due to both performance and financial incentives and also the expiration
of upgrade paths. Presently, we have a 520 that's about 3 years old
which doesn't have any performance problems and for which IBM has yet
to show an upgrade path. Management would like me to give them something
they can put on their radar with respect to budgeting and planning an
upgrade.

Any thoughts on what I can tell them? We're on a 9406 running V5R3.

Thanks in advance,

Bryan Burns
