There are tricks to running SQL statements within CL. However most, if
not all, of the tricks I know will not directly return a result back into
a CL variable. For example you can't do a
select sum(Quantity) into :CLVarA from ItemMaster where ItemNumber=:CLVarB

Most of the tricks involve wrapping up a CL statement into a source member
then one of the following:
- "compiling" that source member with CRTQMQRY then running it with
STRQMQRY
- running the source member directly with RUNSQLSTM
Neither require the SQL product 5722-ST1
The ...QMQRY option allows you to pass parameters INTO the statement.

One of the most popular tricks involves making the statement nothing but a
series of variables then you can do something like
CHGVAR &CLVAR ('Update MyFile set Quantity=50 where ItemNumber="abc"')
RUNSQL &CLVAR
A little searching for RUNSQL may help you find prewritten wrappers.
