I think the way we react to the comment below about 'for the programmer'
depends on where we came from as a programmer and what we do now. As a
developer, I want a IDE that simplifies the task of writing code. I went
back to school about 10 years ago where most of our work was done using
Visual Studio V6. It was night and day compared to banging out java code on
notepad. That being said, it doesn't matter what you're using to write code
- the basis for creating something that users will want is always
requirements analysis which is going to be done with people one way or the
other. If you have the luxury of getting as much as you can up front, like
in a IT environment where you have access to the end user, then the process
will be cheaper down the road. If you're in a situation like working at a
software company, it's a much longer process where usually the customers
have bought your product in order to beta test it.

for the programmer, microsoft's products are outstanding. as an end user
I
find a lot of their stuff wanting.
I couldn't agree more with that (and what some uneducated and/or uninformed
people on this list will no doubt call a 'sweeping generalisation')
statement.
In many developers minds (non-Microsoft developers too) Visual Studio, in
almost all its versions, has been the 'benchmark' for other IDE/developer
environments.
As a developer *using* their 'user' products (either by choice or having to
due to corporate 'policy') I too often find then 'wanting' and/or not doing
something 'just the way I'd do it'.
