I wrote a green-screen RPG application for our Student Activities office to use. I just used Wasp hardware connected to a standard PC and it runs Client Access. Wasp has special keyboards that you can re-label (F1=PAY, F3=DISCOUNT, etc), bar code readers and mag stripe readers (which just send keyboard strokes to the PC). Our application also does credit card verification through the iSeries (using Curbstone's software). You could write your own.

Subject: Point-Of-Sales Register Options
We are looking at options for a possible new POS or cash register system. As
a government entity, we have people come in and pay for permits and things,
but we also have bills (like water and permits) coming in the mail that we
would also like to automate as much as we can to make the cashiers more
efficient with less errors. While we want something that can easily
integrate into the System i, we are thinking about the possibility of a
Windows-based application.
We are just looking at the possible options at this time.
Vendors, feel free to contact me privately about your options.
