Many iSeries customers taking cash, checks, credit cards (private label and/or major cards) thru native applications. Bolting on a Win App requires you deal with the real-time vs batch update issue, plus maintaining connectivity. The degree of difficulty would also be partly based on what your current app is or is not doing with payments and balances.
One current customer uses Cherry keyboards w/credit card swipe built in, attached to pc running iSeries Access, with wedge scanner for barcoded stuff. The card reader & barcode reader are basically doing the work of keyboard entry. Coding your mailed bills, plus above equipment allows your cashier to treat mailed in bills the same as if customer in front of you.
Some banks now supply check scanning equipment & software (another customer) which can scan the check & transmit a deposit to the bank. About 90% of checks readable. Some colored backgrounds interfere with scanning, but it greatly reduces labor.

Subject: Point-Of-Sales Register Options

We are looking at options for a possible new POS or cash register system. As
a government entity, we have people come in and pay for permits and things,
but we also have bills (like water and permits) coming in the mail that we
would also like to automate as much as we can to make the cashiers more
efficient with less errors. While we want something that can easily
integrate into the System i, we are thinking about the possibility of a
Windows-based application.

We are just looking at the possible options at this time.

Vendors, feel free to contact me privately about your options.
