iSeries supports both SQL and non-SQL access to database files. Why?
Because it *IS* a database machine. The database is
implemented below
both those I/O methods. That's a bonus not available to
developers on
other systems.

Actually, IIRC, both Oracle and SQL Server provide APIs for non-SQL access into the DBs.

I don't believe they are used much now, but I think it used to be pretty common.
