In that case it sounds like the "metadata" that some tools use. It also
sounds a little like copying a query that has the right joins and
calculations in it - just obfuscated enough that the users wouldn't hose
up the joins or calculations (not necessarily a bad idea). However my
biggest comparison is to a decent view, or join logical. Although joining
on a derived field sounds challenging. Might require a CTE. Nope, not
that hard. This works fine.
select location, item, clusterflip, descr
from p1 join p2 on location concat item = clusterflip
