Thanks. No, I don't think "instead of" triggers had anything to do with
it (they sound like just another of the many workarounds for the simple
fact that updating a join-logical is right up there with dividing by
zero on the "absurdities" list); rather, I was told about somebody
babbling about DBU being able to do it. (Naturally, QuestView has its
own workarounds for updating both join-logicals and
multi-format-logicals, and I think they go back before my time).
