As Lukas mentioned the cable is used to connect the modem to the wall.
It's nothing more than a high quality (and quite long) phone cord. It
has a large iron core on one end for noise suppression. Probably one of
the nicest things IBM gives you for free!!

That and the Java Toolbox <grin>.
