Yeah, I found the IOP via the HMC and tried setting it that way, but no
dice.

Perhaps another reason for an HMC :) You specify the alternative IPL
device
on the HMC, and you can tell it an IOP or an IOA, and it has always found
it.

I haven't had a problem on a stand-along system doing a D-mode IPL from the
I_BASE cd, and then bringing up DST and setting my Alternative Installation
Device (close names don't get it mixed up), and using 3580s, 3570s, or
3590s
to continue the load from my SAVSYS Tape.

I will give up then. ;)

I think I do remember reading something about the 3580s either not being
supported as Alt IPL or needing some specific setup in order to be used as
Alt IPL. No big deal to use the disc first (have had to do many times),
was just wondering I was missing something!

Resistance is futile. The general rule is pretty much that if your tape
drive qualifies as an external tape drive (according to IBM maintenance)
then it can be an alternate installation device, but, not an alternate IPL
device.
Done carefully, (as you seem to do), then it's not really that big of an
issue, unless of course you do not have copies of your installation CD
offsite with your offsite tapes. I normally have multiple copies of i5/os
laying around. Also, make sure that your offsite base CD is a somewhat
current respin. Some of the latest and greatest models may have issues
with original I Base CD's.

Alt IPL Device (tape)

I've struggled with this one on just about every migration i've done, and
usually just give up and 'D' IPL to the I_BASE_01 CD and then install from
the Alt Install device from that point forward. On this new 525, even
though i've selected the IOP that the 3580 tape drive is on, it just keeps
cycling through a number of 20031FFF SRC codes and then finally fails. It
seems to be a question of which slot is used for the tape controller,
right?

Does anyone usually hassle through this, or just take the route of IPLing
to the CD and then defining an Alt Install device for the tape and
continuing the install from there? Is there any reason to not IPL from
the
CD if you're doing the LIC and OS install from tape? (haven't seen any ill
effects)
