Son of a gun! It was indeed a coincidence. The drive in slot six just
happened to be DOA. I put in a new drive, and it now shows up as
operational in SST. I suppose I should add it to the RAID set before I
start my PTF apply.
But the errors are all gone and life is good. It looks -- unbelievable as
it may seem -- like I actually got the OS installed! Many thanks to
everyone here for your help (and to Dr. Franken's log for convincing me that
patience is the key).
Only a few other things now, like getting license keys and so on.
