Okay, I reinstalled the V5R1 disks and re-IPLed the model 270, and it came
up just fine. It seems that given an existing version of the operating
system it is perfectly capable of finding the console; it's just on a
scratch load that it's having problems.
I had no luck using the 65/21 control panel method of changing the console.
Is there an SST or DST method that is equivalent? I'm thinking that maybe
the fact that I have a working system right now might enable the tools I
need to go in and change the default, and thus allow the scratch install to
work.
Because otherwise I'm down to trial and error (swapping cards and so on),
because I don't know if IBM will help me scratch install on third-party disk
drives.
