_Can_ they live there? Yes. You can turn on traceflag 1807 and SQLServer
will allow you to specify a unc path for the data and log files
(\\Systemi\sqlfiles\file.mdf for example). However, I don't believe it's
even a supported configuration, and certainly isn't a preferred
solution.

However, even if you did that it wouldn't allow you to write directly to
the SQLServer files. It's no different that asking if you could store
the DB2/400 physicals on a SAN and then modify them from Windows by
attaching to the SAN. To accomplish what you want just use JDBC to
update the SQLServer tables from the 400, or use one of the 3rd party
apps (RJS?) which basically wrapper that process for you.
