You guys are bursting my bubble here. I thought that it was going to be simple.... none the less, thanks for your help.

Pete: Why a DVD instead of multiple CD's? And why would IBM send CD's if a DVD is required? Sigh.....

Rob: Ok. So FSP firmware is a separate step. Based on what you say, the firmware update policy should say "HMC deployed" instead of "HMC managed" since "management" in my mind means that it is taken care *by* the HMC not *from* the HMC. But, whatever. I'll order the now separate FSP firmware update as well. Downloading as we speak.

I need to get this in my head though: Are you saying that FSP firmware is independent of HMC versions AND i5/OS versions? If so, that seems a dangerous practice. If i5/OS is oblivious to but dependent upon FSP firmware and the HMC is oblivious to but dependent upon FSP firmware, then all of this can quickly get out of whack and and isn't "managed" at all (regardless of the wording in the firmware update policy). My rant is based on what used to be a simple OS upgrade process now requires three separate and critical parts to be individually managed and attended to.
So, the *revised* steps are:

1. Change the firmware update policy to "HMC managed" using ASMI.

2. Upgrade the HMC to 6.1.2 in the first jump using instructions I found here: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/eserver/v1r3s/index.jsp?topic=/ipha5/fixeshmc_upgrades.htm. I need to order the DVD or download the DVD image, I guess.
3. Update the FSP firmware to SF240_320_201 from SF240_219 (Question: The "Flash P" and "Load Source A" levels are at SF225_096. Should I be concerned with this or can I proceed and apply SF240_320 and not worry about that?) Instructions for that are here: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/eserver/v1r3s/index.jsp?topic=/ipha5/fix_firm_hmc_no_internet.htm

3. Check on the number of virtual adapters on the HMC for each partition and make sure it is more than 10. Upgrade the HMC to V7R3 plus the latest patches (on order right now).
So, to summarize: In order to upgrade to V5R4M0 and be "current on everything" I have an HMC software update, one FSP firmware update and then another HMC update to get the HMC at the "latest and greatest" level. After the HMC is taken care of, I can upgrade the i5/OS to V5R4M0, taking the time to read through the memo to users and making sure the latest CUME's and Groups are applied. That should get everything to the "latest and greatest" in the iWorld in which we live.

Two things. You need the DVDs I think to upgrade to 6.2.1 from V4, I don't
think you can use the CDs.

Also, once you update the HMC, you will be required to update the
FSP, which is a separate task.

Also, make sure you increase the number of virtual adapters on the
HMC before upgrading to V7, as the min for each partition needs to be more
then 10.
