I also use a separate volume id for each tape. Granted, those who
migrated from S/36 may have gotten into the habit of IBMIRD or some such
thing for the volid of every tape. But once you start using PRTERRLOG you
should change your ways.

If your backup program does an INZTAP then it is quite easy to do a CHKTAP
to retrieve the volid and use that to inztap. I wrote a program called
CHKINZTAP to do just that.
