just had that problem with a portable unit in our bedroom this week... went
back to a window model.

I've a few of them including one in my office and they work great. The
problem of the heat radiating back can be minimize by:

1) Making sure the vent hose is only expanded enough to get the job done.
Don't let it sag and create more heat available area.
2) Wrap the vent hose in a silver insulating foil. (Hardware store).
"Pretty" isn't the goal here, though for a more permanent set up like a
bedroom one can cover the silver foil with some less noticeable fabric.
3) Do NOT use a circulating fan near the vent hose.

It's a matter of available heat and how much of the hotter surface is
exposed to the air volume in the room in which you use the portable units.

Portable units often carry a notice that the BTU rating of a portable unit
will not be as effective as the equivalent widow unit. [because of this heat
feed back issue]

However, the portable units are the only solution in many logistical
situations given depth of pockets and infrequency of need.
