The best source is to read the Memo to Users, and, the What's New this
Release. Read for V5R4, and if you are skipping releases, the info for
them also.
Both are available at Info Center. There has been a lot of stuff added
that added new function. Stuff that in the past you did without, ordered
additional software from IBM, or ordered software from a third party.
Stuff like saving your spool files, additional XML support in RPGLE, etc.
Then again, the most popular option for those who eschew upgrades seems to
be moving more and more applications (or just installing any new ones) on
a different platform until their old AS/400 is left there only to play
Star Trek.
But this quickly degrades into a well, "I really don't need that feature"
taken to extreme to justify not upgrading.
