Lucas, thanks again for your advice on disconnecting the UPS sense (comm) cable because we had another power failure last week on the UPS in question and we avoided another power down. The "defective" UPS carried the load just fine.
To "rule out the UPS", POWERWARE overnighted us another 5125 at no charge but they wouldn't own up to any known issues I installed the new UPS yesterday and it's talking to the 520 just as it should.
Don't like this UPS at all. The audible alarm is hardly, and there's no battery status indicator.

Hi,
As a first reaction, unplug the UPS communication cable. This will
prevent any other abnormal shutdowns due to this issue.
Next step would be to call IBM, and tell them about the issue - I've
seen this before (though on the much smaller 9125 units), and I've got a
replacement UPS shipped (this may take up to a week).

Subject: System i thinks POWERWARE 5125 batteries are weak
Our two LPARS did an abnormal shutdown at 8:05 this morning after a sub
second power failure because it detected weak batteries in the UPS. The
UPS is a POWERWARE 5125 that has performed flawlessly in the past and
has given no indications of weak batteries (it's not sounding an alarm
or flashing the low battery indicator).
Here are the messages from this morning:

Message . . . . : Weak battery condition exists.
Cause . . . . . : The external uninterruptible power supply (UPS)
indicates
a weak battery condition. If utility power fails during this
condition, the
system may begin an immediate shutdown. See the Backup and Recovery
book,
Has anyone run into anything similar? Any advice on making sure this
doesn't happen again?
For what it's worth, this was the first abnormal shutdown we had on our
AS/400/System i units in the seven years I've been maintaining them.
Thanks in advance.
