Except that the data can be intercepted, logon id and password to. If
you don't know who you are connecting to do you want to dump your data,
even encrypted. A few weeks a PC can break the encryption password with
a brute force attack.

Transferring already-encrypted data via 'normal' FTP ought to be almost
as
secure as using SFTP. It might be worth metioning that to your trading
partner - you could use your original idea, minus the "old fashioned"
hardware.
