Goooooing way back....(1971 ??) IBM signed a consent agreement
with the Feds, that they "would not ever" go back into the
"time-sharing business". (Supreme Court antitrust case)

I assume that agreement is still in place ???

Most of the younger crowd on the list would not be aware of
this.

To move around that decree, they are in the FM business using
the customer's machines.

I'm sure the idea of leasing partitions has crossed somebody's
mind over at IBM.(or maybe not)

I'm just thinking here, but wouldn't this actually be a very cool option for
anybody not doing Windows? Think about it. You could have your own highly
secure, highly available i5/OS partition, in which you could run PASE, PHP,
MySQL, Java, even Python. Or you could even have a full-blown LAMP
partition.

YOU don't have to worry about keeping the system up to date. YOU don't have
to worry about PTFs. YOU don't have to worry about backups or disk failures
or networking issues.

In fact, unless you're a hardware geek and you really enjoy building your
own machine, this sort of hosted service might actually be preferable to
running your own box.

And for the Windows crowd, include an option for an IXS card and you can do
Windows development as well!
