<snip>

The Thin Console does not connect to i5/OS at all. It is plugged into an
Ethernet port on the Service Processor Card (where you can also access
the ASMI Web Interface).

True with respect to the physical connection, but not completely true about its communications. The TC communicates with i5/OS via the "short stack" implemented in the SLIC. Connectivity from the FSP to i5/OS is part of the FSP's job. I was not referring to the physical connection, but rather to the communications portion.
As Larry already pointed out, if you need remote access, buy an HMC. Even for
a single LPAR machine the capability of managing the system and remote
connectivity make it a steal once you include the stress factor of not being
able to completely see the status of the system, get and record SRC and the
underlying word codes, etc remotely. When it hits the fan, the HMC will pay
for itself in about 5 minutes. (not to mention pulling off the i5/OS upgrade
from home during the Superbowl or World Series on a late Sunday night)
