A few years ago, our company had a severe financial crunch and had to let
some long time employees go. They thought they would replace me with a
cheaper employee (Indiana is an at will state) & offered me a severence
package ... I opted to keep part of my job (part time). I since have had
much of my hours returned, but I am still on part time, which means I don't
get vacations. I have however, been permitted to take off on some family
emergencies & occasionally to IBM school. One time I was so sick the doc
gave me a note to stay home, but I was able to VPN in from home, to do some
essential functions.
I am never away from the office for more than 3 days without getting a help
desk call.
My boss has found it neccessary to be away for a few days right around
end-fiscal month, which me and the accounting lady had always thought it
was a big no no for key personnel to be away at key times. He thought this
time it would be Ok because he could VPN in from his trip, but part of it
was by air, and world events cranked up security, which interfered with his
plans. Although a laptop going flakey interfered even more.
I recently did a security review, among other things asking people with
laptops if they had their passwords "programmed" into their sign-on, so
they never have to sign-on & if they know to get their passwords changed
ASAP after any incident of their laptop or PC going missing. I was
pleasantly surprised to find that most co-workers were aware of the risk of
using mobile computing devices with "programmed" sign-ons.
However, reading the documentation on PC remembering password has given me
some pause, with respect to when the data is encrypted & when not ... I
have some concerns about evolving threats over connections that other
people think are secure.
We usually know when a co-worker PC is taken to some repair shop, so then
we can see if that PC signed on when the co-worker did not yet have it back
... probably the repair shop checking that it is working, but we are
curious to see what they get into.
Al Mac brings up some good points on being able to complete the tasks the
high profile person used to do. One big security thing is to enforce
vacations. And don't do the obvious of forcing them to schedule their
vacation so they are never gone during period end. Having them gone
during period end on occasion is a good thing. This will let you know
what processes are documented sufficiently and which are not. Watch also
that employee who is never gone the day that PR checks are printed. One
employee got pretty clever with UPDDTA and the direct deposit file.
I am concerned that this one employee is so critical to the department.
I've suggested disabling the profile when they are on vacation. The idea
is met with horror. Not only do I want to ensure that the job is covered,
but I'd like the poor person to get a real break when on vacation instead
of remotely connecting all the time.
