Anne,
I think I said number under service wasn't THE best indicator, but frankly,
it's A LOT A LOT A LOT better than the "number shipped since...." which
includes everything, with no tracking for replacements, discards, etc... In
effect, using that IBM number, if you bought a white box, upgraded to a
black box then bought a (system name du jour), in effect that's three
boxes...for one site...2 of which have been discarded....so the number would
be overstated by, uh, 200%... :)
And, we won't even begin to go into some of the games that "business
partners" have played over the years to keep their numbers up... :) :) :)

Actually, Don, systems under service is misleading as thousands of
customers with older model systems do not have them under maintenance
and yet they run their business daily on System/36, early AS/400
models....they just keep on working!!
The last number I heard several years ago is most likely not accurate
today. IBM marketing does have a total shipped since S/3x days and
number under service.
