But, is it not possible to call the stored procedures from excel?

Possible yes, easy no. But the issue goes beyond that. It's not just
that you made it harder, but you've limited what they can do.

W/change access to the file they can simply issue an 'update item set
price = price * .9" and effectively give everyone a 10% discount. But
with stored procs (AND no change access to the files) they could only
call the "ChangePrice" stored proc, passing it one item # and a new
price. Can they cause the same damage? Sure, but not by mistake, and not
in one call.

It's important to note though, that just using a stored proc won't solve
the update problem. You also have to change the user's rights to the
underlying file and have the stored procs adopt authority.
